Upper has identified four current market gaps: 1. Channel: Insurers still offer product largely via traditional channels and have thus failed to capitalize on the always connected, tech-savvy, multi-tasking under 45’s that enjoy having access to instant, customized, short-duration, cost-effective, innovative products. 2. Product: Insurers still offer packaged, long-duration solutions that generally do not meet the needs of the consumer. Mobile computing leads to customized solutions e.g. Jawbone allows consumers to build their own speakers, Trek allows customers to build their own bikes, Starbucks for coffee, etc. 3. On-demand: Insurance has been unable to capitalize on the on-demand theme that technology delivers. Consumers use mobile technology watch TV on-demand etc.. 4. Customer experience: Current customer servicing in insurance is largely phone based with a complex backbone surrounding documentation etc. Mobile is about two things only – the User and the Experience.
